Sykes on top of surprising WorldSBK FP1 at Donington

Friday, July 05 2019

BMW rider Tom Sykes claimed the fastest time in the opening free practice session for the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship at Donington Park this morning (Friday).

Sykes, a master of Donington with nine wins here, was over three tenths of a second clear of Turkish rider Toprak Razgatlioglu on his Puccetti Kawasaki, with local man Alex Lowes third for Yamaha despite a fall at the Craner Curves.

Loris Baz on the new Ten Kate Racing Yamaha was an encouraging fourth quickest, a fraction ahead of Dutchman Michael van der Mark, who has been passed fit to ride this weekend despite suffering an injury last time out at Misano.

Jordi Torres was next up for Team Pedercini Racing ahead of Kawasaki duo Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam in seventh and eighth.

Bennetts British Superbike Championship regular Peter Hickman was inside the top-10 for BMW, with Marco Melandri completing the top-10 despite a fall at Goddards towards the end of the session.

Current championship leader Alvaro Bautista could only manage 11th place in the session, on his first visit to Donington Park for a decade.

The next session for WorldSBK takes place at 15.00 this afternoon.
