Sykes storms to Superpole at Donington as Brits dominate

Saturday, July 06 2019

BMW Motorrad's Tom Sykes proved his dominance of Donington Park after securing pole position in this morning's Superpole session ahead of WorldSBK race one.

With tricky track conditions after a rain shower before the session, it was a pair of late times from Sykes that were good enough to secure him pole position for race one, almost a second clear of Kawasaki's Jonathan Rea, with Rea's team mate Leon Haslam jumping up to third from the mid pack late on and making it an all British front row.

Sykes' teammate for the weekend, Peter Hickman, secured a superb fourth on the grid, ahead of Ten Kate Yamaha's Loris Baz in fifth and championship leader Alvaro Bautista in sixth for Ducati, nearly two seconds away from the overall pace.

Toprak Razgatlioglu will start seventh for Puccetti Kawasaki, 0.021s behind Bautista and ahead of local man Alex Lowes, who fell early in the session but managed to get out on track towards the end to claim eighth for Pata Yamaha.

GRT Yamaha's Marco Melandri and Ducati's Chaz Davies complete the race one grid top-10.

Sykes commented: "It's absolutely fantastic and credit to all of the BMW Motorrad World Superbike team. We've been making big steps in the development in such a short space of time and against all the other factory teams it's very impressive.

"Misano was a turning point in set up and here at Donington Park, even after a few laps on Friday, I said to the boys that it looks like we've got a balanced machine, and I'm really enjoying riding it this weekend. The weekend has started well and hopefully we can finish it even better.

"It's always a pleasure here on home soil in front of some fantastic British fans and hopefully we can convert this."
