Irwin tops free practice times as Bennetts BSB gets underway

Friday, October 04 2019

Showdown spoiler Andrew Irwin topped the timings in today's free practice sessions at Donington Park ahead of this weekend's penultimate round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.

After a chilly start, damp track conditions prevailed throughout the day and it was Honda Racing's Irwin who fared best, finishing with the fastest overall time. Championship leader Scott Redding was sixth fastest while his Be Wiser Ducati teammate, who sits second in the standings, was ninth.

Irwin, who's currently eighth in the championship standings, was buoyed by his performance after finishing faster than all six Showdown contenders.

He said: "It's only Friday, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to get carried away, but it gives you that little bit of confidence going into Saturday and Sunday so I'll take that as a positive.

"The bike feels good in these conditions, the wet, dry, kind of mixed conditions. To be honest, it is always something that I've been horrendous in before, so it's good we've taken a step forwards in that, and P1 is always a good day. I look forward to tomorrow and hopefully we can do a good job come Sunday."

Just five races remain in this season's title race, with Danny Buchan, Tarran Mackzenzie, Tommy Bridewell and Peter Hickman joining Brookes and Redding in the final Showdown six who are in with a chance of lifting the trophy. With 125 points still on offer, it's all to play for and this weekend promises some intense action as the title fight reaches its crescendo.

The weekend features two Bennetts BSB races on Sunday plus heaps of support race action and off-track entertainment including live music in the Garage 39 restaurant and a bustling trade village.
