Brit truckers impress in Germany

Monday, July 02 2018

Convoy in the Park is fast approaching, and the British Truck Racing Association Championship drivers were in action at the Nurburgring over the weekend (30 June-1 July) as they build up to one of their biggest events of the year.

Four non-championship races were held on the German circuit, and reigning champion Ryan Smith was the star performer, winning three of the contests.

After winning the first two races, Smith then tripled-up in race three with a spectacular drive. Despite trucks being among the biggest racing machines on the planet, Smith managed to win from the sixth row of the grid, quickly picking his way through the field before fighting his way into the lead after taking advantage of a good restart following a full course yellow, to pass David Jenkins and Luke Taylor.

His chances of a clean sweep came to an end in the final race however after he was forced to retire with damage sustained in a clash with local man Heinz-Werner Lenz. Jamie Anderson and Taylor were left to dice it out for the win, with Anderson taking the win by less than a second.

Despite missing out on the final win, Smith was awarded the 'Truck Master Germany' title, given to the driver recognised for their outstanding overall performance at the Nurburgring event.

The British Truck Racing Association Championship is back in action this weekend at Thruxton, before heading to Donington Park on July 21-22 as part of the massive Convoy in the Park event which will see eight truck races, as well as endless family fun around the venue.

Adult tickets for Convoy in the Park are available in advance until midday on Thursday 19 July, priced from just £20 per day or £30 for the full two-day weekend. Discounted rates are also available for children aged 13-15. For more information or to book, click here
