Donington BTCC race 2: Shedden flashes to victory

Sunday, April 24 2022

Honda's Gordon Shedden claimed victory in the second Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship race of the year at Donington Park after a duel with race one winner Tom Ingram.

The pair took advantage of a stall from Colin Turkington on the front row, and battled for much of the race, with Ingram initially holding the advantage, only for Shedden to blast past into the lead on the approach to McLeans on lap 10.

From there, the Scotsman held the lead, and rebuffed a last lap challenge to seal victory by just under two tenths of a second.

Local man and series debutant George Gamble, who ran as high as second early on was third in just his second BTCC race in the Ciceley-run BMW 330e, finishing just under a second ahead of teammate Adam Morgan.

Josh Cook was fifth for the BTC Honda squad, ahead of reigning champion Ash Sutton in his Ford Focus.

Cupra contender Bobby Thompson surged from 12th on the grid to finish seventh ahead of Dan Lloyd's Hyundai.

Jake Hill, who was disqualified from third place in race one, surged from 28th and last on the grid to claim ninth place, and will therefore start towards the front of the reverse grid in race three, with Rory Butcher taking 10th in the Toyota Corolla.

Aron Taylor Smith (Cupra) and Dan Rowbottom (Honda) were in the points again while Jason Plato recovered from his race one puncture to claim 13th from 20th on the grid.

Turkington fought back from his stall on the first lap to secure 14th, with Vauxhall driver Michael Crees 15th and completing the points scorers.

The final BTCC race of the weekend at Donington Park starts at 17.25.
