Frederick flies to frantic double Donington BRDC British F3 pole

Saturday, October 24 2020

Carlin's Kaylen Frederick secured a double pole in a very close qualifying on the Donington Park National circuit this morning, a session which saw 0.576 seconds cover the top-15 drivers.

Held in cool but dry conditions, Frederick secured race one pole by 0.145s, with Hillspeed duo Oliver Clarke and Sasakorn Chaimongkol taking second and third, with the pair separated by just 0.018 seconds.

Douglas Motorsport's Ulysse De Pauw was fourth quickest, 0.008s away from Chaimongkol and three hundredths of a second faster than Fortec's Roberto Faria, his best qualifying result of the year.

Carlin's Nazim Azman was seven thousandths of a second further behind, and the same margin clear of Hitech GP's Reece Ushijima.

Championship contenders Louis Foster (Double R) and Kush Maini (Hitech GP) were eighth and ninth, with championship leader Maini holding provisional pole at the midway point of the session, only to drop down the order late on having had several laps disallowed due to exceeding track limits.

Chris Dittmann Racing's Josh Skelton completed a top-10 covered by just three tenths of a second.

Douglas Motorsport's Manaf Hijjawi was 11th, 0.006s ahead of Double R's Benjamin Pedersen, with Lanan trio Piers Prior, Bart Horsten and Josh Mason all within six tenths of a second of pole. Max Marzorati claimed 16th for both grids in his first qualifying performance with Chris Dittmann Racing, and within 1.4 seconds of the pace.

On the shorter national layout, the qualifying proved to be a fast and frantic affair, with numerous drivers taking provisional pole, only to be knocked off by their rivals. Frederick though was a constant presence at the top of the times, and as a result, took pole for race three also, with his second best time being just 0.009s away from his overall best.

Clarke and Chaimongkol were again his nearest contenders, with De Pauw holding fourth again. Ushijima moves to fifth on the race three grid ahead of Foster and Azman, with Faria, Maini and Skelton completing the top-10, with times again being extraordinarily close, with 0.4 seconds separating the top-10, and 0.6 seconds across the top-15.

Race one was due to commence at 14.55, but continued poor weather meant that it will instead take place on Sunday morning, meaning all three races scheduled for this weekend will now take place tomorrow.
