Ray shines with double delight in BSB opener at Donington

Monday, April 02 2018

Bradley Ray stormed to victory in both Bennetts British Superbike Championship races at Donington Park this weekend in challenging conditions to go top of the table in only his second BSB season.

After a confident finish in Race 1 on Sunday, the 20-year-old led from the start in today's race and never looked like losing momentum. Behind him Leon Haslam fought hard, recording several faster lap times and gaining on the leader as the race progressed, but Ray fought back and kept his cool.

Yesterday's race was hampered by cool track temperatures, while today was a battle against torrential rain that finally cleared in time for afternoon warm-up and race.

"The nerves are high and you don't know what to expect from the first round. It's going to take a while to sink in, I'm sure it is. It's good for the rest of the season to know we can run in wet, dry and damp," he said afterwards.

"It's just an unbelievable feeling, I can't explain how it feels."

2017 champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne, who was runner-up yesterday, finished fifth and hangs on to second spot in the championship table going into his home round at Brands Hatch in 11 days' time. And Leon Haslam, who led in qualifying, made up for yesterday's disappointment with a second today at his home circuit.
