Local hero Haslam takes pole for opening Bennetts BSB race

Sunday, April 01 2018

Local hero Leon Haslam is on pole for this afternoon's opening race of the 2018 Bennetts British Superbike Championship season after a difficult qualifying session that saw several spectacular crashes.

Haslam is joined on the front row of the grid by teammate Luke Mossey and defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne, who left it until the last lap of qualifying to move into third place.

Christian Iddon, Gino Rea and Tommy Bridewell all crashed out early in the session, with Bridewell unable to set a qualifying time, but the cooler conditions didn't faze Haslam and he fired his way to the top and held the position ahead of his JG Speedfit Kawasaki teammate.

Danny Buchan had an impressive qualifying session for the FS-3 Racing Kawasaki team, posting the fifth fastest time as he got nudged down the order in the final moments with Jason O'Halloran and James Ellison completing row two.

Bradley Ray heads row three on the leading Suzuki ahead of Peter Hickman and the second Honda Racing Fireblade of Dan Linfoot. Glenn Irwin, despite his big crash yesterday, completed the top ten for the Be Wiser Ducati team.
