Ingram heads unpredictable BTCC battle to Donington

Tuesday, April 10 2018

Tom Ingram leads the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship ahead of its visit to Donington Park at the end of the month (28-29 April), following an impressive win in the last of three races at an unpredictable Brands Hatch season opener last weekend.

It was Jack Goff that seized the early initiative in Kent, with a commanding pole position - his third in a row - and a lights to flag win in the first race of the season. HIs key rivals in the opener were BMW works stars Colin Turkington and Andrew Jordan, with Ingram's Speedworks Motorsport Toyota Avensis in fourth.

Ingram may well have claimed his first win of the season earlier in the day, during the second race, were it not for perilously unpredictable weather conditions which seriously disrupted the conventional running order.

The Toyota driver was a long time leader in the race, having started on wet tyres, but as the track dried, the pace of those on slick rubber quickened. This allowed a trio of new faces to step onto the BTCC podium for the first time, with Vauxhall's Senna Proctor joined on the podium by Jake Hill and Ollie Jackson - it wasn an all-time BTCC classic.

Race three was a litlte more orthodox, with Ingram storming through the field from 11th to win from Adam Morgan's Mercedes A-Class and Rob Austin's new Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Reigning champion Ashley Sutton was in the thick of it in his Suaru Levorg GT throughout the meeting, and will be aiming to rise to the top at a circuit where he has always qualified well.

Others to look out for are new works Honda driver Dan Cammish, who would have claimed a debut pole position were it not for a pit lane infringement in qualifying, and returning front runner Sam Tordoff, whose impressive pace wasn't reflected in results at the weekend.

As for established veterans Matt Neal and Jason Plato, both had weekends to forget in results terms. Neithe man enjoyed the best of luck, and you can be sure they'll both be as fired up as ever to regain some points at Donington.
