Rousing racing concludes 2018 Donington Historic Festival

Sunday, May 06 2018

Nine races packed with top class historic cars brought the 2018 Donington Historic Festival to a close today (Sunday), as the circuit continued to bask in early summer sunshine.

Machines from as far back as the 1930s thrilled spectators, with the oldest machines in the event, the 'Mad Jack' Pre-War sports cars proving they're still capable of thrilling racing, and providing the closest finish of the day. A mere half a second separated race winner Rudiger Friedrichs's Alvis Firefly from the shared Frazer Nash machine of Frederic Wakeman and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards after over 40 minutes of racing.

Steve Soper meanwhile added another win to his lengthy career honours board with a victory in the U2TC Trophy contest for pre-66 touring cars, while John Cleland may well have challenged for a win in the Super Touring contest were it not for a mid-race spin, but still demonstrated that he is pushing to the max.

Meanwhile a massive 40 car grid contested the two hour GT & Sports Car Cup, featuring retro Jaguars, Listers, AC Cobras, Austin Healeys, Lotuses and more.

Additional racing came from Formula Junior, the , while off track car displays featuring hundreds of rare and classic machines, F1 demonstrations, supercar passenger rides and historic rally and kart demonstrations ensured there was plenty to keep all visitors entertained throughout the event.

The next event at Donington Park is the Endurance Legends classic motorcycle races next weekend (12-13 May), featuring the UK's only four hour classic endurance race. Tickets are available in advance from £14, with free entry for children aged under 13. For more information click here.
