BTCC aces show form on Donington Historic Festival qualifying day

Friday, May 04 2018

Touring car stars showed their class with strong performances in qualifying today (Friday) for this year's Donington Historic Festival, which continues on Saturday and Sunday.

Current BTCC driver Andrew Jordan and his father Mike secured pole by over a second in the HRDC Touring Greats, at the wheel of their Austin A40, while Steve Soper demonstrated that he is still a force to be reckoned with. He claimed pole in the U2TC Trophy for pre-66 under two-litre touring car category in his Ford Capri, just over two tenths clear of his nearest rival in a very tight session, with the top-five cars covered by less than a second.

Soper also qualified his Rover Vitesse third in the Historic Touring Car Challenge (HTCC), while Adam Morgan, a Donington winner in the BTCC last weekend, was just outside the top-10 in his Capri in the same session.

Sam Tordoff was 15th in his Porsche 356 in qualifying for the Pre-63 GT race, while British GT duo Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen demonstrated they are just as capable with historic machinery as they are with contemporary GT cars, qualifying third.

In the Super Touring Car Challenge, John Cleland claimed third on the grid in his Vauxhall Vectra, for the first of two races for the category, which starts at 9.45 tomorrow morning.

The first races of the 2018 Donington Historic Festival take place tomorrow (Saturday), starting from 9.10am. A total of 10 races will take place on Saturday, featuring saloons, GTs and single seaters, including the sonorous Derek Bell Trophy for F5000 cars.

As well as the racing, the majority of the off track activity will kick into gear too, with rally and historic kart demos on the Melbourne Loop, the 1993 European Grand Prix display at the Launch Pad, huge car club displays and the first historic fly pasts from a Spitfire and Hurricane.
