Adam and Davidson sail to British GT success at Donington Park

Jonny Adam and Graham Davidson claimed victory in the two-hour British GT Championship race at Donington Park this afternoon, their first win of the season behind the wheel of TF Sport's Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT3.

The all-Scottish duo led the race from start-to-finish, only briefly yielding the lead during the mid-race pit stop window in a calm and controlled display to take both overall and GT3 class honours. 

Davidson took the reigns for the opening stint of the race and cantered into a handsome lead early on form the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 of Michael Igoe, and the McLaren 720S GT3 of Shaun Balfe, with Ollie Wilkinson's Aston Martin tucked up in fourth. 

Behind the leaders, there was all sorts of drama in the GT3 ranks with a number of incidents taking place. This included a spin for JM Littman in the BMW M6 GT3 he co-drives with Jack Mitchell, which was triggered by a touch from Ian Loggie, and which resulted in a stop-go penalty for the latter in the Mercedes-AMG GT3 he shares with Callum Macleod. 

Others eliminated from front-running GT3 contention early on included Richard Neary in his and Tom Onslow-Cole's Mercedes-AMG and Glynn Geddie behind the wheel of the Bentley Continental GT3 he shares with Ryan Ratcliffe. 

As such, the arly order was Davidson at the front, followed by Igoe, Balfe, and Wilkinson, with Sam De Haan's Lamborghini Huracan and Rick Parfitt Jnr's Bentley Continental completing the top-six. 

Davidson pulled away to a lead in excess of seven seconds early in the stint as Balfe and Wilkinson were bottled up behind Igoe, before the McLaren muscled its way past the Lamborhini at the Fogarty Esses on the 18th lap. Wilkinson followed through almost immidiately on the Melbourne loop, but it was Balfe who began the serious pursuit of Davidson with a series of blisteringly quick lap times.

By the time the pit stop window opened, Balfe was right behind Davidson and the leading duo pitted in unison before reemerging once more in the same order. Wilkinson's and driving partner Bradley Ellis would go no further however, with the Aston Martin suffering a freak fire in the pit lane. 

With Adam behind the wheel the leading Aston Martin quickly resumed the lead of the race and held its position right until the end despite a brief moment of drama late on. As Nicki Thiim attempted to unlap himseld in TF Sport's other GT3 machine, Adam ran wide at the Esses to allow Balfe's co-driver Rob Bell right onto his tail. 

Bell was unable to make the most of this opportunity though as he soon lost time to the leader in traffic, eventually crossing the finish line just under three-and-a-half seconds in arrears.

Following the pit stop phase, it was Jonny Cocker to jumped Igoe's co-driver Denis Lind to take third position and they duly finished in that order amidst little drama, despite a late detour across the grass for Lind. 

Fifth place went to Adam Balon and Phil Keen, who retained their championship lead. Andrew Howard and Ross Gunn completed the top-six, one place ahead of 2017 champions Rick Parfitt Jnr and Seb Morris.

In the GT4 class there was hearbreak for Josh Smith and James Dorlin, whose McLaren 570S dominated the class early on in the former's hands. The car suffered damage late in the opening stint of the race forced them out of contention.

After the pit window, it was the BMW M4 of Mark Kimber and Jacob Mathiassen that assumed the class lead, with Kimber holding the lead into the final 23 minutes of the race. After a staunch defence, Kimber finally ceded the class lead to Seb Priaulx in the Ford Mustang he shares with Scott Maxwell. 

Shortly after this Kimber ran off the circuit at McLeans, ending what had been an excellent performance in the gravel trap. 

Priaulx held on to the finsh to secure class victory for himself and Maxwell, just ahead of Callum Pointon and Dean Macdonald's McLaren, with Lewis Proctor and Jordan Collard's similar machine completing the rostrum.

Further success for the Ford Mustang came int he Pro-Am section of the GT4 class where Olympic cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy took honours with Billy Johnson.
