BENNETTS BSB Qualifying: Rea romps to pole at Donington

Saturday, October 02 2021

Gino Rea claimed his first pole position of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship season in SUPERPICKS Qualifying this afternoon, conquering the changing conditions to put Buildbase Suzuki at the top of the times by 0.696s.

Rea had delivered a consistent run of rapid laps despite the wet conditions to hold off the closing pack as SYNETIQ BMW's Danny Buchan moved into second after overcoming an earlier moment.

There were mixed fortunes for the Title Fighters as Josh Brookes became the first rider to crash out of Q2 at Goddards, the reigning champion was able to return to the garage and return to the track in the closing minutes.

The VisionTrack Ducati rider banked a final lap that put him third, but a final run from Glenn Irwin nudged him back to fourth to head the second row. FS-3 Kawasaki's Lee Jackson was fifth to become the fifth different manufacturer to hold a top five position with Tommy Bridewell completing row two.

Joe Francis impressed on his debut with FHO Racing BMW to qualify in seventh place, just ahead of Kyle Ryde on the Rich Energy OMG Racing BMW. Rory Skinner and Jason O'Halloran completed the top ten.

Peter Hickman was edged into eleventh place but for Title Fighters Tarran Mackenzie and Christian Iddon it was a disastrous session. Iddon crashed out at McLeans and Mackenzie on the brakes into the Fogarty Esses with the pair starting BikeSocial Race 1 in 16th and 17th respectivly.
