Can Rea continue his WorldSBK fightback at Jerez?

Thursday, June 06 2019

The WorldSBK field heads to Spain this weekend (7-9 June) for the next round of the 2019 season at the Jerez circuit.

Reigning champion Jonathan Rea was a double winner last time out at Imola, ending Alvaro Bautista's streak of 11 consecutive wins since his debut in Australia.

Rea's double means there's just 43 points separating the pair, despite Bautista's dominance do far, and the four-time champion is aiming to continue his fightback.

"I'm excited to go to Jerez and understand our potential there," he commented. "After the race weekend in Imola and a positive test at Misano I feel ready for this next challenge. Jerez is a very nice circuit to ride, especially the fast flowing corners at the end of the lap. It will be important to make a lot of laps during practice to prepare for the races, as it's the first time we have raced in Jerez during the summer. The temperatures will be much higher than we experienced during our winter tests. With this in mind, we will work hard and try to keep the momentum going."

Meanwhile, rival Bautista is aiming for a return to winning ways on a circuit he has been round on hundreds of times during his MotoGP days.

"After the last round at Imola, the next race on the calendar is at Jerez, a track I know very well, and so I hope for me that everything will be back to normal! Last week we tested for two days at Misano with a good feeling even though the conditions weren't great. It was an important and positive test for a series of reasons, also for the future, and we did back-to-back tests with various components on the bike rather than aiming for a fast time. For me Jerez is another home race, so we hope to enjoy ourselves here and put on a good show for the increasingly numerous Spanish crowd."

Following the Jerez weekend, there's another event at Misano before the series heads to Donington for the only British round on 6-7 July.
