Donington Historic concludes with wall-to-wall racing

Sunday, May 05 2019

The 2019 Donington Historic Festival came to a conclusion with another full day of racing action today (Sunday) from hundreds of cars spanning several decades.

Hot off the back of two days of stunning action, the final day again did not disappoint, with eight fiercely fought contests featuring single seaters, saloons and sports cars.

Front Engined Formula Junior again presented some of the most entertaining action of the event, with the Lola Mk2 of Peter De La Roche taking victory by just over two seconds from Christopher Drake's Terrier Mk4 Series 1.

The Historic Touring Car Challenge grid boasted a grid as big and diverse as its modern equivalent, and racing to match it too. At the end of the hour-long race, under four seconds separated the winning Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 of Julian Thomas and Calum Lockie, and the second placed pairing of Ric Wood and BTCC ace Adam Morgan in their Ford Capri. Reigning BTCC champion Colin Turkington claimed sixth in his ex-DTM BMW M3.

It was almost as close in the hour-long event for the Stirling Moss Trophy, with Richard Kent's Lister Jaguar Costin less than seven seconds clear of the Philip Walker/Miles Griffiths Lotus 15.

The final race of the day for the HRDC Coys Trophy also saw a tight finish, with the Ambrogio Perfetti/Oscar Rovelli Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1 claiming victory by just 2.087s from the similar car of Peter Chambers, the closest finish of the day.

As well as the on track action, the circuit was again filled with displays and entertainment areas, with hundreds of cars scattered around the venue. A series of F1 cars again wowed fans trackside during the lunchbreak, while attentions turned to the skies during the lunch break as a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight soared across the circuit.

The next major event of the season at Donington Park is the Bennetts British Superbike Championship on 24-26 May. For more information and to book, click here.
