Le Mans winner Smith takes second rally win at Donington

Monday, March 04 2019

Former Le Mans winner Guy Smith claimed his second consecutive rally win at Donington Park on Sunday (3 March) with a 16-second victory in the Donington Rally, as the new season at the East Midland circuit got off to a flying start.

At the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R5 alongside Patrick Walsh, he defeated his father Peter Smith and co-driver John Millington by 16 seconds to follow up his success in last August's Dukeries Rally, with Smith Snr having to make do with second place in his Ford Fiesta WRC car.

Reigning Motorsport News Circuit Rally Champion Chris West and co-driver Keith Hounslow were third overall in their Peugeot 306.

Smith Snr took the initial advantage, only for his son to close the gap down to two seconds after the second stage. Drama followed on the third stage however, as Guy spun on the Heritage Loop section of the layout, but fought back on stage four to go level at the top with his father.

The younger Smith then took control of the event on the fifth stage, and was quicker again on the final two to claim victory.

Elsewhere, TV stunt man Paul Swift was sixth overall and second in class, while FIA Disability and Accessibility Commission President Nathalie McGloin was classified 33rd overall in her first rally.
