One month to go until World Superbikes hit Donington Park

Monday, June 03 2019

There's just a month to go until the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship arrives at Donington Park on 3-5 July, for the East Midlands circuit's biggest motorsport event of the year.

The series attracts the world's top superbike racers, with an international field complimented by a strong line-up of British talent, including two Donington locals in the form of Derby's Alex Lowes and Smalley's Leon Haslam.

Former MotoGP ace Alvaro Bautista has so far been the man to beat this year on his new Ducati Panigale bike. Incredibly, the Spanish rider won the first 11 races of the year, a new record for a series rookie, putting four-time reigning champion Jonathan Rea firmly in the shade. However the Northern Irishman, riding for Kawasaki, won both races at Imola last time out and, thanks to consistent results, is not far behind his nearest rival. The fightback is on!

Meanwhile, Rea is partnered at Kawasaki by Haslam, the reigning British Superbike champion and a former World Superbike runner-up. The Smalley rider made his full-time return to the world stage this year, and has already demonstrated his credentials with podium finishes.

"Being back in the world championship is like being back at school," Haslam said. "I'm learning a new team and a few of the circuits which I've not been to for a few years. We've been a little on the back foot, but when we get it right we've been challenging for podiums and racing with Jonny [Rea], but then we've had other weekends where we've been really struggling and battling only for fifth and sixth place.

"It's been tough but at the same time exciting, because when we get it right we're somewhere close but we've got some races coming up that I'm really looking forward to, and obviously my home race at Donington which is exciting because I know the circuit so well. I feel that we should have a bit more of an advantage and hopefully we'll have that little bit more that we can use to challenge for the top steps of the podium."

Haslam's fellow local Lowes, also a former British Superbike champion, has enjoyed his best season at World level so far this year with a string of podium results and sits third overall on the standings.

There will be three World Superbike races across the weekend, one on Saturday and two on Sunday. It's the first time the event has taken on this format, ensuring plenty of additional action for the thousands of fans expected at the circuit. In addition, there will be further support race action from World Supersport, World Supersport 300, National Superstock 1000 and the British Talent Cup for rising stars of the future.

As well as the world-class racing action, World Superbikes at Donington is one of the circuit's most family-friendly events of the year. The paddock will be open throughout the event, meaning fans will be able to get fully immersed in the event and grab those all-important autographs and selfies. There will also be free of charge access to the popular Paddock Show, which will includes rider appearances, lots of fun and games, live music and interviews.

Fans will also be able to get closer to the podium celebrations than ever before, close enough to taste the winner's champagne showers!

A large display of Ducati bikes will form a focal point in the paddock, while additional event entertainment comes in the form of the 'Wall of Death' motorcycle stunt show, an extreme wheelie machine and face painting for kids.

Fans wanting to make a weekend of it will also be able to stay over on the vibrant infield campsite at the circuit, which will allow many fans to watch the racing from the comfort of their own tent or caravan, while live music plus food and drink facilities will keep the party going well into the night! Spaces remain available, but are expected to sell quickly in the weeks leading up to the round.
