Will Bautista be invincible again at Imola WorldSBK?

Friday, May 10 2019

The WorldSBK field heads to Imola this weekend (10-12 May), with all riders chomping at the bit to finally get one over series dominator Alvaro Bautista.

Incredibly, the Spanish MotoGP refugee has claimed all 11 wins so far this season on his Ducati Panigale V4-R, but has never raced at Imola before, potentially handling a key advantage to his rivals.

With that in mind, Bautista believes he needs to be on top form in Italy to take the overall record of consecutive WorldSBK wins.

"It'll surely be a great weekend and we hope to arrive at the same competitive level we've had so far," the Spaniard commented. "For the Aruba team's and the Ducati factory's home race, we absolutely want to be and must be on the top of our form!"

His nearest rival, reigning four time champion Jonathan Rea believes a positive result this weekend could be key to turning the title fight on its head.

"I am re-charged and ready to attack this mid-part of the season. After four rounds we have understood and evaluated where we are and where we need to improve. So we approach Imola trying to make another step in terms of my riding and also the performance of the bike.

"I see Imola as a track where we can be really competitive and last year we had a great season, so I feel like it is the time in my season where we can try to change the momentum of the championship. Imola gives us a good opportunity to do that."

The Motul FIM Superbike World Championship heads to Donington Park for the only UK round of the year on 5-7 July, with three WorldSBK races to look forward to. Tickets are available in advance from £25 per day, with a full three day weekend ticket priced at £50. For more information and to book, click here.
