WorldSBK is go down under this weekend!

Friday, February 28 2020

The Motul FIM Superbike World Championship revs into life at Australia's Phillip Island circuit this weekend (29 February - 1 March), with the world's top superbike racers and a talented pack of Brits all looking to end Jonathan Rea's reign.

All eyes will be pointing towards reigning Bennetts British Superbike champion Scott Redding, who has joined Ducati for his WorldSBK debut. Early signs are encouraging, with Redding quick in pre-season testing and Friday practice, setting the overall best time.

Redding was over four-tenths clear of the field, with Turkish ace Toprak Razgatlioglu second for Yamaha, just ahead of teammate Michael van der Mark. Leon Haslam was fourth quickest on the new Honda Fireblade, just three hundreths of a second behind the Yamahas. Frenchman Loris Baz was fifth, also for Yamaha, with Rea sixth.

The Brits gunning for glory include Alex Lowes, with the Donington-local joining Rea at the works Kawasaki squad, and hoping for a strong title challenge this year. Haslam, another Donington local, has shown strong pace in winter testing, while Ducati's Chaz Davies should never be underestimated, having taken 30 wins in the World Championship.

Leon Camier will be hoping to put an injury-hit couple of seasons behind him on his BARNI Racing Ducati, while former champion Tom Sykes remains with BMW and is aiming for another tilt at the crown.

A competitive season is definitely in store: the top-12 riders in free practice were separated by less than a second, with four of the Brits inside the top-10.

The only UK round of World Superbikes takes place at Donington Park on 3-5 July, with tickets available in advance priced from £25 for adults, with free entry for children under-13. For more information and to book, click here.
